International Women’s Day (March 8th) – the origins of this important day stem from the struggles of female workers in apparel manufacturing, who faced mistreatment and unsafe working condition in 1908. While the industry has made significant strides toward responsible manufacturing, there is still challenges that women have struggles to make their voices heard and call for gender equality on wages and promotion in emerging economies.
.Hear What Air8’s Network of Suppliers Shared
In the recent interviews with Air8’s network of suppliers about their sustainability goals, we learnt that social responsibility is vital in modern apparel manufacturing and many of them are committed to empower their female workforces:
– A supplier in Vietnam proudly shared that over 60% of their leadership roles are held by women, who play a crucial role in decision-making.
–A leading apparel supplier in India highlighted that almost 70% are female workers. They run various programs to increase the awareness of women empowerment in the global fashion industry such as upskilling their female workers and providing training programs, enabling the women in pursuing managerial positions.
– A garment supplier in China, with multiple factories of garment production, shared their dedication to provide regular training to female workers, helping them understand their rights at work, and encouraging them to report any cases of harassments.
Air8 actively engages the factories to learn about their financing needs for growth and ESG goals, driving transition toward a more sustainable future. We support sustainability not only through decarbonization and environmental efforts but also promoting social compliance and best practices that foster decent work conditions.
